Because the young child is not capable of abstract thinking, he cannot understand much about linear time. But we can give the child memorable stories of specific men and women whose
actions shaped history and whose character exemplified attributes we want to encourage in our children - as well as notable events and symbols of our heritage.
Keep in mind that you are not just instilling your child with facts, but preparing him to take his place in history. Children love stories of noble men and women, especially those that begin with chapters from their childhoods. You may read these stories aloud, or once your children are reading, they will enjoy reading them themselves. Try tapes and videos too. |
